Evolutionary processes • Def: Explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations and investigations over time – Possesses both pattern and process components – Pattern – facts that we see out there – Process – mechanisms that produces the patterns • On the Origin of Species (1859) • All life evolved gradually from one primitive species [lived 3.5 billion years ago] – Split off into many diverse species over time – Gradually because it takes generations to produce evolutionary change • Descent with modification – Inherited characteristics in a population of a species change over time – Ex.
