Document Summary

Textbook: chemistry structure and properties by nivaldo j. tro. 10. 1 on fire, but not consumed: soaking 20-dollar bill in water --> then dipping it into ethanol --> then lighting it on fire. The bill isn"t destroyed because of 2 processes: one that emits heat & one that absorbs heat simultaneously. 1st process: combustion of ethanol, which is an exothermic chemical rxn. The other process: evaporation of water; the evaporation of water is endothermic & absorbs the heat emitted by the combustion of ethanol. The 2 processes cancel each other out: thermochemistry: study of the relationships between chemistry & energy. Calorie is larger unit than joule: nutritional calorie (cal) equivalent to 1000 lowercase c calories. Calorie is the same as a kilocalorie (kcal): 1 cal = 1 kcal = 1000 cal: law of conservation of energy: energy can be neither created nor destroyed, system"s surroundings: everything w/ which the system can exchange energy.
