I. Stigma
A. Refers to an attribute, behavior, or reputation that is socially discrediting bc
individuals bearing the stigma are not able to adhere to standards that society
deems normal
B. Federal funds were allocated for community treatment centers but bc of stigma
and NIMBY, it failed
II. Components Of Mental Illness Stigma
A. Labeling Differences
1. Mainstream society identifies and labels as deviant any individuals that are
different, who are then clustered into a group
B. Linking Differences With Stereotypes
1. These labels become coupled with negative stereotypes
a) With the mentally ill, they are seen as violent and dangerous
2. Other stereotypes: they are incapable, incompetent, or child-like, and that
it is their fault
C. Separating “Us” From “Them”
1. Leads people to not interact with them and behave towards them in a
specific way
2. Regarded as less than human in nature
D. Status Loss
1. Unequal conditions are created and status loss (i.e. humiliation of being
processed in CJ system)
2. Face discrimination in employment, education, housing, medical and
mental health care
III. Types of Mental Illness Stigma
A. Structural stigma
B. Public stigma
C. Self stigma
D. Label avoidance
IV. Structural Stigma & its Challenges
A. Brought by rules, policies, or procedures of governmental institutions that restrict
opportunities for PWMI
1. Can be intentional or unintentional
2. Examples: massive underfunding of mental health system and reforms to
medicare, public funding for research
B. Limited Civil Rights
1. Limit political rights, i.e. voting
2. States are becoming more restrictive for these civil rights
