Document Summary

Chapter 9- peers and delinquency: juvenile gangs and groups. Cliques- small groups of friends who share intimate knowledge and confidences. Crowds- loosely organized groups who share interest and activities. Intimate friends play an important role role in social development, but adolescents are also deeply influenced by this wider circle of friends. In later adolescence, acceptance by peers continues to have a major impact on socialization. Kids choose friends who are similar in behavior in values, and the resemblance increases as the friendships develops; and declines when friendships dissolves. Peer status is important to children and contributes to social and emotional development that follows children of both sex over life courses. Delinquent acts tend to be committed in small groups rather than alone, a process referred to as co-offending. Deviance training- a process in which close friends reinforce deviant behavior choice through talk and interaction.
