One of most ambiguous forms of child abuse. Likely that nearly all parents treat their children in inappropriate ways at some time -> later regret their actions. Psychological or emotional maltreatment & acts of commission vs. acts of omission. Verbal abuse = form of cpm that involves deprecating a child, such as insulting a child or calling a child names, publicly humiliating a child, or constantly criticizing a child. Question over whether include child outcomes as well as parental behaviors in definition of cpm. Definition requiring demonstration of harm -> precludes possibility of preventing harm before it occurs. American professional society on the abuse of children = leading national organization supporting professionals who work with children & families impacted by child maltreatment. Patterns of cpm are typically chronic, severe, & escalating.
