CHAPTER 7: MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
MANAGERS’ ROLES ARE EVOLVING
- Today, most managers tend to be more progressive
- I.e. emphasize teams & team buildings
- Guide, train, support, motivate, coach employees rather than tell them what to do
- Realize workers know about technology more than they do
- Skilled communicator, team player, planner, organizer, motivator, leader
THE 4 FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT
-Management: process used to accomplish organizational goals through planning,
organizing, leading, controlling people, other organizational resources
-Planning: anticipating trends & determining best strategies and tactics to achieve
organizational goals & objectives
- Major objectives: please customers
- Planning teams to monitor environment
- Other functions depend on this

-Organizing: designing the structure of organization and creating conditions and systems
in which everyone & everything work together to achieve the organization’s goals &
objectives
- Pleasing customer at a profit remain flexible & adaptable bc customer needs
change
-Leading: creating a vision for organization & communicating, guiding, training, coaching,
Motivating others to achieve goals & objectives in a timely manner
-Empower employees, giving them freedom to become self-directed &
self-motivated was once called directing
-Controlling: establishes clear standards to determine whether an organization is
progressing toward its goal & objectives, rewarding people for doing a good job, taking
corrective action if they are not
- Measuring whether what actually occurs meets the organization’s goals
PLANNING AND DECISION MAKING
-Vision: more than goal. It’s a broad explanation of why organization exists and where it’s
trying to go
- Gives sense of purpose and set of values that unite workers in common destiny
-Mission statement: outlines the organization’s fundamental purposes.
-Addresses:
- Organization’s self-concept
- Philosophy
- Long-term survival needs
- Customer needs
- Social responsibility
- Nature of product/ service
- Becomes foundation for setting specific goals and objectives
-Goals: broad, long-term accomplishments an organization wishes to attain
- Team process
-Objectives: specific, short-term statements detailing how to achieve organization’s
goals
- Planning follows these questions:
-1. What is the situation now?
-SWOT analysis: analyzes the organization’s strengths and weaknesses, &
opportunities and threats it faces, usually in that order
- O/T: external to firm
- S/W: internal
-2. How can we get to our goal from here?
- 4 forms: strategic, tactical, operational, contingency
