Chapter 11: our lives: the self, identity, and personality. Self-understanding: cognitive representation of the self, based on roles and membership. Infancy: research limited to visual recognition, self-recognition at approx. 18 mo: not until 2yo, develop conscious awareness of their own bodies. Distinguish others by physical and material attributes. Self-evaluation include unrealistically positive and overestimation of personal attributes. Can"t distinguish desired competence and actual competence: understanding others: Perceive others in terms of psychological traits. Understand that people don"t al(cid:449)ays gi(cid:448)e a(cid:272)(cid:272)urate reports of their (cid:271)eliefs. Individual differences in understanding others feelings and desires. Parents talking more about them influences their understanding. More socially sensitive and perceptive than envisioned. Controversial: social interactions and relationships with others contribute significantly to development of self and understanding of others.
