• chapter 14: variations in sexual behavior
o when is sexual behavior abnormal?
▪ variation across cultures
▪ how do we come up with a criteria?
• statistical definition: abnormal sexual behavior that is rare
• sociological approach: sexual behavior that violates the norms of
society
• psychological approach: discomfort, inefficiency, bizarreness which
are culturally defined
• medical approach: exemplified by the definitions included in the DSM
under “paraphilia”
o what is fetishism?
▪ fetishism: characterized by sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors of non-living
objects to produce or enhance sexual arousal with or in the absence of a
partner
• over a period of 6 months
▪ develop in early life
▪ theoretical explanations: learning theory, cognitive theory, sexual addiction
model
o transvestism
▪ transvestite: derives sexual satisfaction from dressing as a member of the
other gender
• more common among men
• men who later become transvestites begin cross-dressing in childhood
o sadism and masochism
▪ sexual sadist: derives sexual excitement and satisfaction from inflicting pain
on another person
▪ sexual masochist: derives sexual satisfaction from experiencing pain
o voyeurism and exhibition
▪ voyeurism: person who becomes sexually aroused from secretly viewing
nudes
• does not include pornography
▪ exhibition: derives sexual gratification from exposing his genitals to others in
situations that are inappropriate
• usually men

• female sexual arousal disorder: lack of response to sexual stimulation,
including lack of lubrication
o subjective, psychological, and physiological component
o more common after menopause
