PSYCH 9C Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Cupcake, Lynching, Fishing Reel
Document Summary
2 influences cause conformity: informational influence, normative influence, informational influence: a reason for conformity based on people"s desire to be correct, asch experiment was done again but the correct answer was more difficult. In this case, the participants were more likely to copy the answers of the other people in the group. With more difficult discriminations, more social conformity will occur: this can be alerted so the participants have less of a reason to follow the answers of others (convincing the participants that they are smarter than the others). This would make particisants less likely to rely on other"s answers and so there is less conformity: this is why people get opinions from others. When they do not know the answer, they ask others and if that is not possible they will compare their reactions to other people: ex: infants and young children.
