PUBHLTH 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Cohort Study
Document Summary
Lec 2. 2 ch 5 epidemiology - study of distribution and determinants of disease frequency in human populations define disease - death certificates, blood tests, par (denominator) ways to measure frequency: Incidence - # of new cases over defined period of time. Prevalence - # of existing cases at a specific time. If ability to diagnose increases, incidence/prev increase. Prevalence depends on incidence and prognosis distribution of disease - who/when/where determinants of disease - why/risk factors human pop - epidemiology is observed kinds of studies - goa is to determine assn btwn exposure and disease/other health outcome. Intervention study - closest to an experiment. Giving some kind of component to experimental group (ex: vitamins, minerals, some suggestion/education - intervening, following our rec) Then compare this exp group w control group. Cohort study - decide you"ll have large # of ppl and collect data on exposures and track outcomes over time. Only diff w intervention is that ppl choose their own exposure.
