Exposed to information daily -> book will help understand what information is useful. Book will demystify statistical methods -> way that they influence life. Stats used to analyze situations involving uncertainty + variation. Statistics = collection of procedures + principles for gaining + analyzing information to educate people + help them make better decisions when faced w/uncertainty. Can also satisfy curiosity about others + world around us. Stats observe relationships not visible to naked eye. Chapter 1: the benefits and risks of using statistics. 1. 4 don"t be deceived by improper use of statistics. Examples in book were all questionable because: Most researchers want to extend results beyond participants. Need people or objects studied to be representative of larger group. Population = the larger group from which the sample was chosen. Start w/observing something -> unique or part of larger pattern. How to move from noticing to knowing. Decide whether the study should be an observational study or a randomized experiment.
