Indentured servant: settler who signed on for a temporary period of servitude to a master in exchange for passage to the new world. Many homeless children in london were kidnapped into servitude in america why slavery replaced indentured servitude: Cheaper to have them + more cost effective. Conditions had improved in england so less people were coming over prejudice reenforced slavery. Easier to identify african americans on the eld bc of skin color not just europeans trading slaves, but also african tribe members. Their economies were being hurt because of this. Used it to get people out of the country. Seen as ok by christians since they were non-christian slavery are rapidly (1700- 11% of pop, increased to 20% of pop in 1770) Justi ed by a widespread racism that viewed africans as beasts of burden in 1700 there were enslaved africans in every one of the american colonies. Slavery in english north america varied greatly from region to region.
