Document Summary

Asexual reproduction: one parent contributes all genetic material to offspring, uses mitotic cell division process, creates a genetically identical offspring; similar to the idea of clones. Sexual reproduction: two parents give rise to offspring that have unique combinations of genes inherited from the two parents. Segments of dna: each gene in an organisms dna has a speci c locus on certain chromosome, heredity information is passed from parent to offspring. Pair of chromosomes: have 2 copies of each chromosome, therefore 2 copies of each gene, in humans, diploid cells (somatic) have 46 chromosomes: 2n = 46, diploid cells are somatic cells that have two copies of every cell. *2n=46 is for humans (numbers can change but formula is the same)* Only occurs in cells (ovary or teste) that makes gametes. Fertilization: alternates with meiosis in sexual life cycles. Life cycle: generation-to-generation sequence of stages in reproductive history of an organism: all egg & sperm will end with haploid number.
