Document Summary
Psychosocial development during adolescence = a search for a consistent under- standing of oneself. Role confusion is the opposite of identity achievement or values (originally called identity diffusion) Identity foreclosure occurs when young people accept confusion of not knowing who they are. Erikson highlighted 4 aspects of identity religious, political, vocational, and sexual. Most adolescents have a similar religious identity as their parents and community. Parents influence their children"s political identity: political views heavily influenced by parents and culture, current teens are less conservative than parents. Vocational identity takes years to establish with specific skills and knowledge best. Erikson"s term sexual identity has been replaced by gender identity, which refers to a person"s self definition as male, female, or trans. 4 aspects of family closeness: communication, support, connectedness, control. Parental monitoring: parental knowledge about each child"s whereabouts, activities, and companions. Peer pressure: peers push innocent children to use drugs, break laws, and so on.
