WOH 2012 Chapter 8: Chapter 8 – The Greek Adventure
Document Summary
Ancient greece can be divided into 3 epochs: Geography and political development little land for large-scale farming, no broad river valleys, no expansive level plains. Expert sailors easier to travel by sea due to expansive mountainous terrain. Political fragmentation: groups on each island, valet, and river basin developed their own community & identity. Greeks thought of themselves first as residents of a particular town & thought second of being a part of a common culture and language (critical weakness in becoming united nation). Greek originated on the island of crete minoan culture. Minoan towns were masters of the maritime empire. Minoans might or might not have been greek but they contributed to greek civilization. Maritime dominance contributed to advanced society with grand monuments. Mycenaean from the mainland conquered the minoan & settled on crete. Knowledge from the period comes from the iliad and the odyssey by homer. Iliad mycenaeans" war against troy & odyssey adventures of odysseus.
