ANTHRO 7 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Daphne Major, Stabilizing Selection
Document Summary
Adaptations: components that help organisms survive and reproduce in their environment. All 3 are needed and with all 3 > guaranteed. Population expansion > infinite, but environment supporting population, finite. Organisms in population vary effecting survival and reproduction. During the drought > lead to changes/depletion and kin mimicked parents. Selection says beaks increase until it is no longer beneficial to have beaks this large. Equilibrium: large and small beaks stop fluctuating because survival is helped > caused by stabilizing selection. Selection isn"t the only decider of beak size. Populations don"t remain static over long times unless selection is operating. Must be consistently favored by stabilizing selection > static. Continuous: range goes from one end to another with intermediate cases (height) Discontinuous: distinct types with no intermediate (dwarfism), not evolution/ not 1 jump.
