ARCH&UD 10B Chapter Laugier: Laugier Reading (Preface and Intro)
Document Summary
No rule that defines taste and talent. An artist must know how to work with the tools at hand but that is not enough. You need to have principles to determine his judgements. Great people before us have set a foundation of what beauty is. Sometimes things that go away from that considered not as great. Architecture has made presets on what is beautiful by looking at ancient buildings. Even the faults are seen as beautiful. You need to have a good foundation of principles in order to understand the difference between the faults and beauty of a building. Modern authors except m. de cordemoy go beyond commentary. Laugier is hoping there will be an architect to save" architecture by creating rules on the good way of doing it. (1) absolute beauty is fundamental in architecture, independent of mental habit and prejudice. (2) compositions are susceptible to dullness and liveliness, to appropriateness and disorder.
