Congress passed laws to restrict immigration from the asia-paci c triangle (ex: Chinese exclusion act: wwii--asian americans more accepted because their homelands were allies to the us. Labor market-- there"d be shortage of engineering + medical people without foreigners. Hart-celler act: point was to reunite families and receive skilled labor. Got rid of quota system: middle class in developing countries are frustrated with lack of mobility opportunities or can"t make changes bc of repressive political systems. Us investments in developing countries target production for export and take advantage of cheap labor rural to urban migration displacement of urban workforce lots of potential emigrants. Economic development following american model raised expectations in standards of living and the lack thereof.
