IONIC AND COVALENT BONDING
COVALENT BONDING
Covalent Bonding:
Formed by sharing pairs of electrons between atoms
o 1 pair is 1 covalent bond, 2 pairs are 2 covalent bonds...etc
Potential energy - distance between nuclei graph shows covalent bonding of 2 hydrogen
atoms
o Minimum of graph represents the bond length and bond energy of the H-H
covalent bond
o
Electronegativity:
Measure of an atom’s ability to draw electrons to itself
Electronegativity increases in periodic table towards the top right corner
o
Difference between electronegativity between 2 atoms is rough measure of bond polarity
o Small difference results in a nonpolar covalent bond
o Big difference results in a polar covalent bond
o Very big difference results in ionic bond
Lewis Structures:
Instructions on drawing Lewis structures
o Find out number of valence electrons of compound
o Draw least electronegative in the centre with other atoms surrounding it
