No negatives, no subsequent prints on paper. 1841: calotype by william henry fox talbot (patented) Could produce negatives but the images were too soft or fuzzy. 1851: frederick scott archer, wet plate collodion process, detailed glass plate negative able to generate thousands of positive prints, only a few sec- onds of exposure. Drawback: preparation and development had to take place just before and just after the photo was taken, harder to take images in the eld.
