Visual Portfolio Response (Picture 5 about Student Loan)
The picture describes a masked men who holds the sign “Unemployed superhero master of
degrees, shackled by debt” on one hand and a steel ball that reads “loans” on another. This
picture encapsulates perfectly the notion of the myth of education. One of the underlying myths
about education is that it empowers students and allow them to enjoy the benefits of social
mobility. It is believe that if one earns a degree, then one would be able to be employed and
work up the corporate ladder. However, this is often not the case. As the expense of a college
education rises and competition for jobs rises, students are having a harder time to pay off the
loans while finding a job that pays. This is becoming an increasingly prevalent phenomenon in
today’s society, thus contributing to the myth of education.
Learning to Read
The article by Malcolm X highlighted how he come to possess such large sum of linguistic
knowledge. In the article, Malcolm X advocated for the power of reading books over having a
college degree. The distraction that is the college experience is an inhibition to a person’s path to
knowledge. Even though this does not directly relate to the myth of education, we could see that
a good education is not purely dependent on the school system. Most of the time, one’s
motivation to learn is the bigger factor towards a good education. Malcolm X was able to make
full use of his motivation to learn and empower himself. We can argue that it is not necessarily
the content of the book that empowers book readers, but rather the after-thoughts and eagerness
to learn that comes after each read. Malcolm X was able to tailor the education to his need and
not let the school system tailor him. This autonomy is the key to a successful educational
experience.
