GEOG 152 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Social Stigma, Lead Poisoning
Document Summary
Book: streetlife: the untold history of europe"s twentieth century by leif jerram. Urban cities separated home and work for men and women. Women"s lives still have not improved in proportion to men"s standard of living. S separated home and work for men and women. Jerram argues that feminism allowed for more jobs in the city for women. However, this liberation brought upon women impoverishment and starvation in the quest for their own money (as opposed to a husband earning the money for her). Despite the freedom a woman can have in working for her own living, some women still preferred to be housewives to avoid breaking the rural niche systems of rights and responsibilities. I find jerram"s argument convincing because feminism brought upon many rights for women in the workplace, however this was not a preference for all women due to the struggles that come with employment.
