The individual muscle cells are usually called muscle fibers because they are relatively long and slender. Skeletal muscle fibers are incapable of dividing, but new muscle fibers are produced through the divisions of stem cells in adult skeletal muscle tissue. As a result, at least partial repairs can take place after an injury. Skeletal muscle fibers will not usually contract unless stimulated by nerves. Because the nervous system provides voluntary control over its activities, skeletal muscle is described as striated voluntary muscle. Cardiac muscle tissue is found in the heart. Like skeletal muscle tissue, cardiac muscle tissue is striated.
