PHYSCI 107 Chapter Notes - Chapter 16: Dense Irregular Connective Tissue, Myenteric Plexus, Submucous Plexus
Document Summary
The digestive system consists of a muscular tube, the digestive tract, and various accessory organs. The digestive tract is also called the gastrointestinal (gi) tract or alimentary canal. It begins with the oral cavity (mouth) and continues through the pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. It also increases their surface area, making them more susceptible to attack by enzymes. The tongue and the teeth in the oral cavity begin the process. Within the digestive tract, waste products from glandular and secretory organs mix with indigestible materials of the digestive process. These waste products are dehydrated, compacted, and ejected from the digestive tract as feces. The mucosa, or inner lining of the digestive tract, is a mucous membrane. p. 110 it consists of an epithelium moistened by glandular secretions, called the mucosal epithelium, and an underlying layer of areolar tissue, the lamina propria.
