Document Summary

Chapter 9: when cells are out of control. Cell division and replacement of old cells is called mitosis. Cell death and replacement is equally proportionate. Molecular control system of the cell makes sure it only goes through mitosis only when necessary. At first the immune system recognises this. But they eventually take over the immune system. Due to dna damage in genes that regulate cell growth. Protein products of genes that upregulate cell division. These result in chemical reactions- free radicals. Normally dna prevents and repairs damage caused by reactive oxygen species (free radicals) After a while the dna reparative functions and enzymes cannot keep up. Cancer cells travel in blood and lymphatic system. They produce vitamins, c, a and e. Antioxidants repair dna damage caused by free radicals. Exercise generates antioxidant enzymes such as catalase. Helps manage free radicals similar to fruits and veggies. All throat cancer and liver cancer risk increases.
