Republican party coalition of antislavery forces: unusal in its success of challenging the 2 party establishment. Led to 3 party system for a short while at this time: formed in opposition to the kansas-nebraska act, which overturned limits on the extension of slavery, elected abe lincoln as pres. Triggered south secession and civil war, but was victorious. Republicans and democrats competed on nearly even terms: but republican became majority at this time, democrats took a stance that threatened working class, but loss ascendency to the great depression. New deal coalition brought together democrats of every conceivable background: united white southern segregationists, northern african americans, poor farmers, roman catholics, southern baptists, etc. The diverse groups agreed on only 1 thing electing democrats.
