Cultural experiences may shape the way they express and cope. Mild to moderate symptoms of depression may be evolutionarily useful for stressors. Symptoms such as slowing down, loss of motivation, withdrawal, may help people disengage from situations that aren"t going well. Can help refocus motivation and conserve/redirect energy. Onset may involve disruption or failure of normal mechanisms that regulate negative emotions following major losses. Stressful life event --> increased probability of depression. Depression may precede or follow a stressful life event. Negative events involving major losses of important people or roles have a crucial role in precipitating major depression, esp in the first episode. Severe events increase probability but most who experience them do not become depressed. More likely when even is associated with feelings of humiliation, entrapment and defeat.
