Document Summary

Both alleles are expressed in the phenotype resulting in a combined trait or one that is intermediate between the two. Sickle cell anemia - two recessive alleles. Round blood cells become sickle shaped, esp under low o2 conditions. Sickle cells clog blood vessels and block blood flow pain, swelling, tissue damage. Common in african populations where malaria is common. Allele is carried on the x chromosome. Males are more likely to be affected because their sex chromosomes do not match. In females, any recessive allele on the x chromosome can be suppressed by a dominant allele on the other x chromosome. Rates of miscarriage, infant and childhood deaths, birth defects, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, and mental retardation all are greater for boys. Proportion of male births has declined in industrialized countries. Due to rise in stressful living conditions which heighten spontaneous abortions especially of male fetuses.
