Ses and ethnic segregation in us schools consigns large numbers of low ses minority students to a form of schoolwide, deleterious homogeneous grouping. Peer tutoring can contribute to favorable outcomes. Assignment to a college track accelerates academic progress but assignment to a vocational or general education track decelerates it. Low ses students tend to be assigned to lower course levels and non-college tracks.
