A tightly controlled socratic style of turn taking is not the only form of discourse found in the classrooms of this study. Not uncommon for professor to break into this kind of mini lecture, taking off from a particular point to explain an issue at some length to the class. 3 different, broadly defined styles of teaching are discernible in the classes of study. One professor used largely lecture, speaking 95% of the time and 91% of that monologuing or lecture. Most teachers use a modified form spending 45-60% of class discussion in focused dialogue with individual students. Finally there are those who spend only 21-29% of time in more extended focused dialogue exchanges. All professores at times launch into mini lectures, especially when clarifying legal points. By calling on students at particular moments the professor retains a much attenuated version of the dialogue found in other classes.
