Document Summary

Problematic moral standing was long ago codified in terms of an association with the devil. Doubts about moral condition of lawyers have been restated in secular terms. Another common deflation of the lawyers claim to status and respect is comparison with the oldest profession : prostitution. The lawyer-prostitute equation is occasionally elaborated in extended lists. A lawyer is an expert on justice like a prostitute is an expert on love . The difference between the two in this is simple the prostitute is honest, the buck being her aim, but the lawyer is dishonest, claiming justice and a service to mankind is his primary purpose. In their everyday profane activities lawyers are portrayed as being acquisitive and grasping. If the lawyer is grasping, his reach is for the superficial and materialistic, traits commonly associated with yuppies. Not surprisingly, the lawyer is capable of lethal indifference to strangers, even famously virtuous ones.
