Document Summary

Plants that diverged before angiosperms appeared are still present, but where they live and grow has been shaped by the evol of flowering plants. The closest living relative of plants are green algae. Plants are rather diverse from their algal/water plants b/c had to survive in air now. 4 major transformations in life cycle and structure characterize the evol hx of plants. Helped to enhance dispersal so can go farther from the parents. At first would have had no roots and photosynth would occur when it rained so had enough water. Vasc plants are taller and able to photosynthesis over a much wider range of conditions. Most plants have xylem and phloem built when stem elongates; some can produce secondary ones through the vascular cambium. Removed the dependency of water/wet surfaces for reproduction/sperm to swim. Seed plant life cycle differs from that of spore producing vascular plants.
