Chapter 13: the age of dissent and division 1500-1564. There was a war between the catholic and protestant rulers. Germany lead by charles v tried to reestablish catholic unity by attacking. German princes who supported lutheranism: this failed because charles v also had wars going on in france. 1555~ the peace of augsburg was created as a compromise settlement. (cid:862)as the ruler, so the religio(cid:374)(cid:863) ~ the religio(cid:374) of the pri(cid:374)(cid:272)e or ki(cid:374)g is (cid:374)o(cid:449) the religion of the entire land. Increase in influence for patriarchal families who were the central institution. Protestant rulers enforced godly discipline very seriously. Depravity of human condition= a big tenant in protestant belief. Domestication of the reformation~ mainly in free towns. Protestantism consisted of human depravity and a constant need for discipline: family was the basic unit of religious education, all powerful father figure with responsibility of the household. New religious ideal for women: married, obedient, protestant good wife.
