Distinguishing the apparent and real identity of visually deceptive objects: all improvements show development of theory of mind. Before ages 3-6: children begin engaging in make believe play. Leslie: when child sees mom pretend a banana is a phone, childmust infer that mom (the agent) is pretending (engaging in behavior) and that the true identity of the object differs from the pretend identity of the object. Others: special domain where children accommodate represewntations of multiple situations without full cognitive understanding of representation. So a child that pretends a banana is a phone must simultaneously represent the object as an actual banana and as a telephone even though they may not be aware of the simultaneous representations. Children rely on contextual cues in pretence to distinguish pretend representations from real ones.
