Chapter 11: the arab struggle for independnce: egypt, iraq, and transjordan from interwar era to 1945. Britain"s iraq mandate was met with resistance, so they tried a strategy called empire by treaty, which is giving limited independence but actually controlling everything. Egypt was the launching point for military campaigns and all material and human resources were used for the war effort. Even though they distanced themselves from the ottomans, they didn"t want british rule nor fight another muslim country. The egyptian elite were restless and ignited from wilson"s self-determination speech. Created a national uprising that forced britian to make a negotiated agreement. The formation of the wafd and the revolution of 1919. Seven notables asked british to let them represent egypt at paris, but britain refused. They went around the countryside to mobilize popular support for independence. Sa-d zaghlul created the wafd party: he was raised in a rural environment and got a french law degree from cairo.
