Document Summary

Biology is the scientific study of living things (organisms) Made up of a common set of chemical components (carbohydrates, fatty acids, nucleic acids, amino acids) [cells] Cells convert molecules form environment into new biological. Extract energy from environment to do work. Share similarities among a fundamental set of genes and replicate this genetic info when reproducing. Exist in population that evolve over time. All of these --> common ancestry from one life form. Star: nucleic acids (molecules that could reproduce) --> proteins (large molecules with complex but stable shapes) Enclosure of complex proteins and other biological molecules by membranes. Prokaryotes: unicellular and enclosed by a single outer membrane. Eukaryotes: multicellular who have both outer and inner membranes to enclose specialized organelles within their cells. Cellular specialization allowed an increase in size and efficiency at gathering resources/adaptation. Chemical reactions transform sunlight into biological energy powering the synthesis of large molecules then broken down to provide metabolic energy.
