Document Summary
Many famous scientists whose research saved millions of lives. Edward jenner- discovered and tested vaccinations (got rid of smallpox) Fritz haber and norman borlaug- created green revolution , hybrid crops and synthetic fertilizer contributed to surplus of food. Science is the use of systematic observation in order to acquire knowledge. Also use of empirical methods- measurement and observation to approach inquiries. Systematic observation is core of science -> observations measured, recorded to eliminate memory bias; systematic = careful observation under controlled conditions. Observation leads to testable hypotheses (and theories) Science is democratic- people form their own opinions, debate conclusions; scientists are skeptical. Science is cumulative- we learn based on truths discovered from earlier scientists. Many psychological phenomena (depression, intelligence, prejudice, etc. ) cannot be studied -> some people think psychology is not a real science. By using behavioral measures and rating scales, one can measure thoughts and feelings.
