BILD 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 16: Blastomere, Pattern Formation, Intrinsic Activity
Document Summary
16. 1 - cell types in multicellular organisms. Model organisms: species that are easy to raise in the lab and use in experiments. Cell differentiation: the process by which cells become specialized in structure and function. Cytoplasmic determinants: maternal substances in the egg that influence the course of early development. Specific genes expressed in any particular cell of a developing organism determine its path. Two sources of info tell a cell which genes to express at any given time during embryonic development. Most influential being the signals conveyed to an embryonic cell from others around. Determination: the point at which an embryonic cell is irreversibly committed to becoming a particular cell type. Differentiation: process by which a cell attains its determined fate. Apoptosis: programmed cell death , cellular agents chop up the dna and fragment the organelles and other cytoplasmic. Protects neighboring cells from damage that they would suffer if a dying cell leaked out all its contents.
