Document Summary

Animals also gain energy from the energy released during hydrolysis: why is it important that digestion is extracellular, when you"re unicellular, you ingest things by phagocytosis and digestion is intracellular. In this case, you don"t get specialization of cell types and you can"t eat very much since individual cells are small and can"t handle large things. When you"re multicellular, you can have cell specialization and since digestion takes place outside of cells, you can eat more (cells form large cavities that can hold food). Digestion and nutrient absorption can be carried out in a stepwise fashion (they can ingest food while other food is being digested). The most clear example can be seen in initial carbohydrate and protein digestion. Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth and is digested by amylase: an enzyme that operates best at a ph of about 7, or neutral. Amylase is found in your saliva, and saliva is about ph 7.
