Document Summary

This book looks at the daily life of german jews to provide a more intimate and detailed picture of the effects nazi policies had on their victims. The german people were as much responsible as the nazis themselves for causing the suffering of german jews. They would take it upon themselves to harass or beat jewish people in the street as a kind of preemptive strike . The nazis sent mixed signals to the jews. Sometimes they would ease their policies or recognize jewish achievements, only to begin oppressing them more harshly. Since german jews felt tied to germany (its people, culture, etc), many tried to stay as long as they could. It is important to look at daily life because the nazis didn"t just start sending the jews to camps. Their anti semitic policies were rolled out slowly so that it was hard to tell what was going on (whether you were jewish or not)
