One of the first men of ideas. Served in the court of his home state of lu without much influence. Left lu with a small band of students and wandered through neighboring states in search of a ruler who would take his advice. Learned what confucius had tried to teach through the analects. A collection of his sayings put together by his followers after death. Thrust of confucius"s thoughts was ethical rather than theoretical or metaphysical. Talked about the ideal age in the early zhou dynasty when everyone was devoted to fulfilling his or her role. Superiors looked after those dependent on them. Inferiors devoted themselves to the service of their superiors. Husband and wives embrace what was expected of them. Mutual obligations of a hierarchical sort underlay the first four of these relationships. Friend and friend is a mutual obligation between equals. Defined gentlemen(junzi) as a man of moral cultivation rather than a man of noble birth.
