Inferiors devoted themselves to the service of their superiors. Husband and wives embrace what was expected of them. Mutual obligations of a hierarchical sort underlay the first four of these relationships. Friend and friend is a mutual obligation between equals. Defined gentlemen(junzi) as a man of moral cultivation rather than a man of noble birth.
