Mmw 13 textbook notes central asian nomads & chinggis khan and the mongol. Conflict with nomads from central asia in many societies. Steppe: arid grasslands from hungary through southern russia and across central asia. Nomadic herders due to land not being able to support agriculture. Fight over resources: losing groups could be killed or enslaved. Trade with other societies for products: raiding when trading was difficult. Clans: members of extended family; had chiefs. Xiongnu/huns and mongols were the biggest and most threatening confederations. First inner asian people to have a written language. Some turkish tribes blended in with cultures and adopted religions. Many turks captured and converted to islam, serving as soldiers within the caliphates. Yurts: tents that the mongols lived in; made of wooden frames and wool felt that was greased to be made waterproof. Would set up yurts in protective circles. Lots of furs and skins in clothing because of cold winters.
