PHIL 28 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Methane Emissions, Regenerative Agriculture, Permaculture
Document Summary
Emphasize building soil nutrients, fertility, function, biomass, and biological communities. Of emissions from coutnries without developed industrial economies. Including (not limited to) all forms of agriculture practiced before industrialization. Fertilizer comes from nitrogen-fixing plants, compost, or animal maniure. Pesticides are avoided or derived from non-synthetic sources. Modern farmed animals bred for increased profit but cause stress on their bodies. Cows inseminated to ensure milk production and separated from children after birth. Hens are inseminated to ensure egg production. Even heirloom, free-range, or grass fed: they must be slaughtered early for profit. Backyard animal operations can cause more suffering. But doesn"t make much of a difference if they still use modern breeds or have short lives. Need to scale more to provide more food clearing more land. Cow grow more slowly and live longer. Cows consume more grass will produce more methane. Some pasture have co-evolved with prior or current animals.
