Psychopharmacology- study of drugs" effect on the nervous system and on behavior. Drug- an exogenous chemical not necessary for normal cellular functioning that significantly alters the function of certain cells when taken in relatively low doses. Drug effect- the changes a drug produces in an animal"s physiological processes and behavior. Site of action- location at which drug interacts with molecules in cells, thus affecting some biochemical processes of these cells: drug only effective if it reaches sites of action. Pharmacokinetics- process by which drugs are absorbed, distributed within the body, metabolized, and excreted: routes of administration. Enters bloodstream immediately and reaches brain in a few seconds. Require increased care and skill and entire dose reaches bloodstream at once (bad if animal is especially sensitive to it) Intraperitoneal injection- injection into space that surrounds stomach, intestines, liver and other abdominal organs. Fast, but not as fast as intravenous. Intramuscular injection- injected directly into a large muscle.
