PSYC 122 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Deimatic Behaviour, Animal Communication, Spiny Lizard
Document Summary
Spotted female hyenas had testosterone equal to males- not charactasitic of mammals or other hyenas: other research, females during pregnancy have a higher testosterone than lactating- and embryos could be exposed to it. But there is hormone that is released at a certain time and inactivates this during the critical period: in contradiction, when anti-androgen chemicals are released to preg. Hyenas- they still retain the pseudopenis: evolutionary history occurs via changes in preexisting traits. Although unsure- point is-solution lies in identifying how changes to normal(preexisting) dev and sensory mechanisms may be the reason for the first pseudopenis. Another ex. - male and female ears of whistling moths that detect ultrasonic signals from male moths. Pos. explanation- modifications of ears used by ancestors to detect bats, predator of the moths- ancestor could hear bat hunting through ultrasonic echoes-also could hear the moth wings beating. If true could have been used to communicate with mate-searching females (receivers) and acoustical males (signalers)
