Transportation system carries vital materials to the cell and carries wastes away from the cells. Protection white blood cells protect against disease; clotting protects from excessive blood loss. Regulation buffers regulate ph; regulates body temperature by absorbing and distributing heat. Plasma: 55% of blood, medium in which materials are transported. Substances are dissolved in the plasma nutrients, ions, dissolved gases, and hormones: carries away cellular waste. Urea and uric acid to kidneys: transports co2 from cells to lungs, plasma proteins: 7-8% of plasma; most of the dissolved substances in the blood. Balance water flow between blood and cells. Albumins majority of plasma proteins; water-balancing ability. Formed elements: transported by plasma: platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells, red bone marrow in the bone cavities prodiese and nurses formed elements. Support blood stem cells: undifferentiated cells that divide and give rise to all formed elements.
