No language can exist without a vocabulary. Only in the context of a sentence do words have meaning. Rules that govern how words can be put together to form meaningful sentences. Rules that tell us what combinations of words are grammatical. Rules that govern the deep structure of language. Understanding a language is merely memorizing rules. Applies to vocab of a language just as much as its grammar and structure. Understanding a word in terms of mastering the rule that governs its application to a sentence. Depends on how we think about mastering a rule. No more to mastering a linguistic rule than being able to use words in accordance with the rule. No need for competent language users to represent that rule in any way. Just to distinguish applications of the word that fit the rule from applications that don"t fit the rule.
