Modes of delivery: all speeches are not created, nor are they delivered the same, memorized speeches. There are a couple of v. good reasons for this recommendation. 1st is that you might forget what you are supposed to say. W/ no notes to rely on, this would cause you to freeze and create a v. uncomfortable situation for you and your audience. Second reason we advocate against memorizing your speech is that, u(cid:374)less you"(cid:396)e t(cid:396)ai(cid:374)ed i(cid:374) ho(cid:449) to deli(cid:448)e(cid:396) it p(cid:396)ope(cid:396)ly, a memorized speech will sound unnatural and awkward. Memorized speeches leave no room for adapting to audience feedback, which we already emphasized as an important element of a successful speech: manuscript speeches. Manuscript speeches are written out word for word in an essay format. Manuscript speaking allows you to plan exactly what you will say and exactly how long it will take, and there are some occasions in which precise language is esp. important.
