They offer emotional support, partners for practicing social skills, socialize one another, contribute to sense of identity, help each other make sense of their lives, and they have common ways of looking at the world. Slides 8-9: explain the developmental trends in social skills for each age group. In 2nd year, side-by-side play and awareness of one another"s actions. Play groups of 2-3 children and use a good bit of social skills. Parallel play (playing side by side by not together) They have the concern about being accepted by peers. Tendency to assemble in larger groups than in early childhood. Outdoor peer groups structured with games & sports. More peer pressure, may separate into different groups. More concern about acceptance and popularity among peers. Same gender cliques, often restricted to members of a single ethnic group. Increasing dependence on friends for advice and emotional support.
