KAAP220 Chapter Notes - Fall 2018 Chapter 5 - Wound healing, Erythema, Thrombus
Document Summary
Section 1 - functional anatomy of the skin. Integumentary system: system makes up about 16% of your total body weight; most accessible and least appreciated organ system; often referred to as the skin or integument. Dermis: papillary layer of areolar tissue and a reticular layer of dense irregular connective tissue. Separates the integument from the fascia around deeper organs. The network of arteries and veins connected to smaller vessels servicing the tissues of the integumentary system. Protect underlying tissues and organs against impact, abrasion, fluid loss, and chemical attack. Excrete salts, water, and organic wastes by glands. Detect touch, pressure, pain, and temp stimuli. Deepest layers of the epidermis form epidermal ridges. Greatly increase the surface area for attachment, firmly binding the epidermis to the dermis. Found of the palms of the hand and soles of feet. The scanning electron micrograph of the tip of an index finger shows the ridge patterns in the thick skin that produce fingerprints.
